The Indian government's decision to develop Jawaharlal Nehru and Chennai ports as hubs has revived hopes of relaxation of the cabotage law, to allow foreign vessels to ply the coastline loading and unloading containerised cargo. The ministry of surface transport's shipping department is examining the issue following demands for relaxation from several quarters, although interest groups are divided on the matter.
