摘要

The new metal detector finds in Suomussalmi offer a welcomed addition to the Late Iron Age record of northern Finland. This is especially so because, while archaeological field work has been undertaken in Northern Ostrobothnia and Lapland somewhat regularity during the recent years, this interest has so far resonated to only a few sites in the region of Kainuu. Therefore many questions related to social organisation, subsistence strategies, settlement patterns and economic exercises of the inland communities remain yet to be answered even on a basic level. Obviously, the basic problem presented by the archaeological record acquired with metal detectors persists; most of the new sites are difficult to discuss in any detail due to the lack of archaeological context, but at least these finds should offer a road map of sorts for the future field work which is certainly required to understand most of these sites.
