This is due to the fact that centuries of active contact in this area between the Saami, Karelian and Russian ethnic groups has given rise to a particular population known in the academic literature as the Pomors. In this overview, an attempt is made to shed light on certain questions regarding the ethnic history of the Pomor population, traditionally viewed as Russian, using linguistic data as the main source. This makes it possible to obtain a more detailed picture of the ethnic processes that have occurred on the sea coast and finally resulted in the formation of the ethno-local group of Russian Pomors. Special attention is paid to factors that have impacted the population that inhabited the White Sea coast prior to the arrival of the Russians, a group which, for various reasons, is often overlooked in academic research, particularly in Russia.
