Station Officer Mick Norton, MIFireE is a co-founder of the Young Firefighters Association(YFA)in the West Midlands. This paper seeks to give an insight into how the YFA benefits the individual members and the local community with an emphasis on fire safety. It also seeks to show how fire engineering generally may benefit by sowing the seeds of fire science in the members to give them another option to choose from when future career choices have to be made. This paper is written from the author's personal experiences of working with and meeting members and instructors from the UK and mainland Europe.
