In December 1995, I had preliminary discussions with Chief Fire Officer Graham Meldrum, CBE, QFSM, FIFireE, CIMgt of the West Midlands Fire Service in the UK, regarding the possibility of giving 'Approved Status' to their training centre. Readers will recall that on a number of occasions in the past I have written of, or spoken about, the concept of 'Approved Status' being given by the Institution to training and educational centres and establishments. The idea seemed a natural extension of the accreditation and validation process that we have been carrying out for a number of years now on individual courses and qualifications.
