For the last month or so I feel like I've been living the lyrics of Willie Nelson's song "On the Road Again," as travel has increased substantially. I found a visit with Volvo's diesel engineers and the company's engine manufacturing factory particularly interesting. Recall most U.S. engine suppliers met the most recent emissions regulations by using some kind of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in which a small portion of the engine's exhaust was cooled and reintroduced into the engine's combustion chambers to lower the temperature within the chamber thereby reducing oxides of nitrogen. The technology works quite well—better, in fact, than most fleet managers expected it might. The two major drawbacks are higher initial cost and decreased fuel economy.
