It was a beautiful day, with clear blue skies and the freedom to fly without the need to talk to anybody — to soar like Jonathan Livingston Seagull. It was a'day that was just like any other great day for flying, yet that day is now burned into my memory (and likely, into that of my copilot, Ed Waiters). Phase 1, which shook us out of our contented malaise and triggered abject denial, was the sound: POP! WERRrrrrrrr... r... r... r... Where did my power go? Oh no, this can't be happening to me! Certainly not to me. This only happens to other pilots I read about. Not me though.
