摘要

While flying home from LAX this weekend, I read with a sense of deja vu "Voice of Rescue" [April 2015]. This article could have been written about an experience my best friend and I had almost 30 years ago flying home from a ski weekend in Lake Tahoe. We knew a system was approaching, but due to a series of minor communication issues with Flight Service, our briefings never mentioned the rapid advance of weather, and we immediately encountered icing as we climbed over Dormer Pass. Much like Phillip, we began to have difficulty maintaining altitude as we flew into a stiff headwind. Throughout the flight the controller from Oakland Center was a voice of calm reassurance. (I can only imagine what my voice sounded like.) Thankfully, we never got below minimum vectoring altitude, and eventually the High Sierra gave way to the Sacramento Valley, ice started peeling off the plane, and our hearts started beating again. Thank you to the controller who helped us that day. Even back then we both realized that we had never come closer to meeting our maker.
