Even by the time you read this column, the events leading to the horrific circumstances behind the crash of Germanwings Flight 9525 will still be fresh in our minds. To my airline pilot psyche, the events are disturbing if not baffling. I have gone on record saying that it has become a personal matter. In one manic moment, a colleague has decimated the public trust literally placed in our hands. A day after the CVR (cockpit voice recorder) tape condemned the copilot for his murder/suicide, a business class passenger boarding my flight in London asked a flight attendant the status of my family relationships. In other words, were any personal issues going to affect my mental state while I took command of our 777? Although the inquiry may have been a poorly executed and brash attempt at humor, it may still have been a reflection of public sentiment.
