By now you've probably heard that the first of AOPA's regional grassroots fly-ins, which took place in San Marcos, Texas, on Saturday, April 26, was a major success, with at least 2,500 AOPA members attending. The event, held at Redbird Flight Simulations San Marcos SkyPort facility, threatened to be too popular. Had it not been for technically IFR conditions all morning on the day of the show, there's little question there would have been too many airplanes and maybe too many people. There were at the peak around 400 airplanes that flew in, the vast majority of which came in IFR. Had blue skies prevailed, that number, we estimate, could have exceeded 700. The change to a regional format from the one big annual AOPA Summit was the brainchild of new AOPA President and CEO Mark Baker.
