Martha Lunken's piece in Flying ["Propellers, Tattoos and Rope Trips," Unusual Attitudes, July 2014] reminded me of an event in 1990 or so in the town of San Jose del Guaviare in eastern Colombia. We were involved in geophysical exploration in the Amazonas region at the time and routinely received fuel via C-46s. Apparently the rope was a usual piece of equipment, and in at least one instance, the crowd of onlookers was enlisted to pull it and rope-start the airplane. As the rope came to the end, on came the switch and off she roared.
