Pilots today take it on faith that on Dec. 17,1903, Orville Wright piloted the Wright Flyer, designed and built by himself and his brother, Wilbur, on the first successful powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flight in human history. It's our shared cultural history as pilots, and as such, it's fitting that the Wright airplane hangs at the entrance to the Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. But there's a growing body of evidence suggesting that the Wrights might not have been first, that instead a German immigrant named Gustave Whitehead might have flown two and a half years earlier in a remarkable little airplane of his own invention, which he called the Condor. The story goes that on Aug. 24,1901, Whitehead flew the Condor in front of a couple of eyewitnesses on a flight that, if it really happened, makes Orville's crow hop look like child's play.
