OCKWELL COLLINS'PRO Line Fusion next-gen avionics system recently earned TSO approval from the FAA, giving the green light for the system to be installed in the cockpits of a bevy of new bizjets. The suite will be standard equipment in no fewer than a half-dozen airplanes, including Bombardier's long-range Global Express XRS and Global 5000 as well as sister company Learjet's emerging Model 85. Embraer will install the system in its under-development Legacy 450 and 500 midsize jets, and Gulfstream will showcase it in its super-midsize G250. Fusion represents a quantum leap for Rockwell Collins. A fully digital suite, Fusion takes advantage of the latest digital technology for lighter, more reliable and more readily scalable systems that are mated to the needs of particular airframes. It is also intended to be by far the most user-friendly flight deck from Collins, since it takes advantage of advances in user-interface design, from big displays to pilot cursor control, to create a much-easier-to-operate system. This is easy to see in the accompanying illustration by the marked lack of knobs, buttons, switches and warning lights.
