Maybe it is because I don't fly as many hours a year as I used to, or maybe it is for other reasons such as passing time and more complex avionics, but I seem to have to work harder at staying current now than in the past. The rule on IFR says "within the preceding six calendar months," but, to me, to go that long and then jump back in would be like playing Russian Roulette. In fact, this past winter I went for six weeks (not months) without flying a trip of over an hour in duration and felt a little like a stranger to the airplane. And that was with 18 instrument approaches flown in the preceding six calendar months.
