In 1947, Air Force pilot Charles E. Yeager forever changed the face of aviation when, at 24 years old, he piloted the experimental Bell X-1 rocket plane through the never-before-broken sound barrier. For this, President Truman awarded him the Collier Trophy. Not bad for a guy who got airsick on his first flight in 1941. Yeager became a P-51 fighter ace in World War II and, after the war, turned to test piloting at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He reprised his supersonic ride in 1953 aboard the X-1A, this time clocking a record speed of 1,608 mph. He flew 341 different aircraft types during his career-but he never owned an airplane of his own. In a 1985 speech, he said he saw himself as "just a lucky kid who caught the right ride." Yeager died at age 97 on December 7, 2020.
