Imagine a time when radial engines dominated the skies; when townspeople turned out to watch airplanes land at a local field; when perfection was taking off with a buddy, wind in the flying wires and white scarves trailing, to explore the land and sky of a wide-open countryside. Now imagine that it's real. On most days, the Timmerman Airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a nondescript general aviation airfield, indistinguishable from dozens of other such airports stretched all across the country. But on this particular September morning, the airport seems caught in a Twilight-Zone wrinkle in time. Pilots in white mechanics' overalls or knickers, flying boots and jaunty tweed caps scurry about, uncovering and attending to a fleet of tube-and-fabric flying machines. Props are carefully pulled through on enormous radial engines, oil levels are checked, and duffel bags are stowed in front cockpits and brass-latched baggage compartments. With the mist still edging the early morning air, it almost seems as if this colorful and rare collection of antique airplanes and pilots could have landed here, like the baseball players in Field of Dreams, through some mysterious, invisible doorway to a bygone era when Johnny Livingston owned the skies and Charles Lindbergh conquered the seas.
