This Article Is J. Mac's Idea. Being aware of a three score and 10 milestone for me, he suggested it with the rationalization that the pilot population is aging so it is of interest to everyone. The hint that he thinks I am leading the way was not lost on me. My interest in the subject was advanced by the thought that went into an item in February (On Top), comparing my flying in 1956 with today. This is actually the third thing I have written about pilot age in relation to safety. The first was written when I was 33; the second when I was 44. So at least I have looked at the subject from different perspectives. There are no statistics on the subject. From the NTSB: "Because flight-hour activity numbers are not available for each age group, no meaningful inferences can be made regarding specific age-related accident risk." Research that I found on the subject sounds a similar note.
