We get word on general aviation wrecks in four ways. The first is from the general media which seems to take great delight in showing a wrecked airplane. Then there are the terse initial reports on the web from the FAA. These contain little information other than that the airplane crashed and the level of injuries, if any. Next comes the NTSB preliminaries, which are just that, and shouldn't be used for anything other than general information because you have to work very hard to get a feeling for what happened. Finally, there are the NTSB final reports which reflect the best effort of that august body to say what really happened.
