Airframe ice needs the attention and respect of all pilots. It is perplexing to deal with at times, though, because of the blanket forecasts of ice. It's often as if they forecast icing in the clouds and in precipitation east (or west) of the Mississippi River. That's a broad stroke. What it is telling us, as pilots in command, is that the possibility exists and it's entirely up to us to rule out the possibility of ice or properly deal with it if it appears. In other words, those broad ice forecasts are a way for the forecaster to pass the buck. There's an experimental ice forecasting product that has been around a while that can be helpful. More about that in a minute.
