The Cessna 162 SkyCatcher light sport aircraft preproduction prototype crashed and was destroyed in what Cessna is calling an unrecoverable spin accident. According to the company, during a spin test that started at 10,000 feet, the pilot inadvertently got the airplane into a flat spin and was unable to recover. He deployed the BRS whole-airplane parachute, but for as yet unknown reasons, it failed to activate. The test pilot then bailed out of the airplane, which crashed in an unpopulated area. Neither the pilot nor anyone on the ground was hurt. Cessna has more than 1,000 orders for the SkyCatcher and plans to continue flight testing with ASTM approval expected later this year. BRS says that it is looking into why the airframe parachute failed to deploy.
