Despite dark clouds and a biting wind whipping across the airfield, a sizeable crowd gathered at Duxford for the last Showcase of the year. These events offer enthusiasts and families quality flying for the standard museum admission price. This, the fourth such undertaking by IWM in 2019, gave visitors the opportunity to experience a splendid selection of aircraft on a far more intimate, pared down basis. Although not strictly an airshow, the line-up for October 20 boasted 19 aeroplanes and produced several special moments and unique formations -including the pairing of a de Havilland DH.83 Fox Moth and Chipmunk. Split across two one-hour time slots, highlights included the Historic Aircraft Collection's (HAC) seldom-seen Hawker Fury, Pete Kynsey in the LeVier Cosmic Wind Ballerina, a blistering solo display from Dave Southwood in The Fighter Collection's (TFC) F4F Wildcat and the trio of Spitfire Mk.Vb, P-51D Mustang and Hispano Buchon - the last three flown by noted warbird maestros Rolf Meum, Paul Bonhomme and Steve Jones respectively. Other eminent participants included Mark Miller's camouflaged Dragon Rapide, the ever-agile PBY-5 Catalina Miss Pick Up, HAC's Hurricane Mk.XIIa and Spitfire Mk.Vb, and the TFC grouping of Spitfire Mk.XIV, F8F Bearcat and Corsair, dubbed the 'Furious Formation'.
