Based at St Louis in Missouri, the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation was a major supplier of combat types to the US Navy (USN) following World War Two. Created during 1939 by James S McDonnell, the company at first was principally a component manufacturer. However, it began to branch out during the 1940s with pioneering jet warplane design and construction.
