By April 1945, Hitler's Third Reich was on the verge of destruction. The Luftwaffe, which had played a decisive role trying to defend the homeland against allied bombing in the last two years of the war, was also facing defeat. At the start of the war, the Luftwaffe had been designed to support offensive operations. Six years later in 1945, it was on the back foot and stretched to the limit. It wasn't just desperately short of fuel, but its fighter force was unable to protect large areas of Germany. Consequently, the Jagdwaffe (fighter force), which had been required to defeat the enemy's daylight and nocturnal bombing operations, had failed. Even hope of technical breakthroughs such as rocket and jet fighters, together with air-to-air missiles, did nothing serious to impede the massive Allied bomber force.
