Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX PT879 (G-PTIX) flew for the first time in 75 years on October 28. Its maiden flight, in the hands of pilot Pete Kynsey, followed completion of restoration at The Spitfire Company (Biggin Hill) Ltd. PT879 was built at Castle Bromwich in 1944 and shipped to Russia that October as part of the Lend-Lease scheme. It joined the 767th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Murmansk Air Defence Force, but on May 18,1945, collided with another Spitfire, damaging the tail. Pilot Lt Semyonov parachuted to safety and the aircraft landed almost flat but inverted on the Kola Peninsula's Arctic tundra.
