Young men from all over the British Empire and Commonwealth volunteered to fly and fight during World War Two. This was equally true in the small colony of Southern Rhodesia.rnAmong the many volunteers were brothers Peter and Rodney Simmonds. Peter, the elder by nine years, joined the Southern Rhodesia Air Unit as an air gunnerrnin November 1939 and flew in Hawker Harts. He was soonrnselected for pilot training and sent to 4 Flying Training School at Habbaniya, Iraq.rnBy the time he returned to his old unit, it had been re-named 1 Squadron Southern Rhodesian Air Force.
