Charles Rolls studied engineering at Cambridge and was fascinated by high-performance cars. In 1903 he started to import lavish French cars into the UK. This brought him into contact with quality motor engineer Frederick Henry Royce. This odd alliance of the 'toff with a BA and MA and the orphan with an apprenticeship gelled into Rolls-Royce, manufacturers of quality cars, in 1904. Henry Royce designed and built them - the Silver Ghost appeared in 1906 - and Charles Rolls set up the means to sell them.rnIn the narrative, we saw Charles forsake his two Short-Wright Biplanesrnfor a French-built example. He flew it at the Nice International Meeting in May 1910. On June 2 of that year, he flew this machine from Dover in Kent to Sangatte in France and back without alighting. He was the first to fly the English Channel twice.
