For almost as long as there have been cars and aircraft, designers have dreamed of merging the two. In fact (and not only incredibly but also somewhat unlikely) the very first attempt at building a flying car can be traced as far back as 1912! However, the three most significant attempts to produce an airworthy automobile are the 1937 Aerobile, the Airphibian of 1947 and the most successful, the Taylor Aerocar. Although I'd briefly seen the Aerocar during my previous visit to the Warbird Adventures' hangar at Kissimmee, Florida, I hadn't had the opportunity to study this astonishing machine in detail. Now, as I began to scrutinize it carefully I began to realise not only the scope of designer Moulton 'Molt' Taylor's vision, but also the scale of his genius. For example, the prototype had front-wheel drive, wishbone suspension units on all four axles and used a significant amount of fibreglass in its construction - in 1949! Even more impressively, quite apart from the sheer audacity of designing and building a flying car, Molt successfully achieved something that is even harder - certification!
