This rhetorical question was posed through gritted teeth by many members of the USAAF's 444th Bomb Group when they glimpsed their first overseas base in India. They had come to Charra, a 'Hell's half-acre' seemingly in the middle of nowhere. This sobering development was one of the less positive beginnings to Project MATTERHORN, the ambitious US plan to knock Japan out of the war by making massive air raids on the Home Islands, using the new Boeing B-29 Superfortress.
