Diversified firms involved in the food industry were again busy in 201 2, recording 21 mergers last year, one more than the prior year. Monsanto, Dow, Dupont and Bunge were all active in the M&A sphere and acquiring assets or businesses with add-on value to existing segments. Monsanto bought the planting-technology company Precision Planting to expand its Integrated Farming Systems unit with a company that engineers technology that help farmers improve seed spacing, depth and root systems, while Archer Daniels Midland sought to boost its international presence with a $2.76 billion bid for Australian grain company CrainCorp.
