The food industry suffers an inordinate number of fires. Coping with the disruption caused by a major fire has been the rite of passage for many an aspiring manufacturer. The high incidence of fires has a lot to do with the nature of the business: widespread use of hot ovens and deep fat fryers surrounded by quantities of combustible materials. But the sector also has to cope with more than its fair share of arson - with one of the most recent examples being the fire at Warburtons' Wednesbury bakery in January (Food Manufacture February 2004, p11). Because of the rising incidence of large-loss fires costing huge sums in business interruption, insurance premiums have been rising rapidly, putting further burden on an already hard-pressed sector. It has led to conflict between insurers and those insured. And now manufacturers face further legislative change, which is set to cause them even more sleepless nights.
