When Phil Lovell joined Uniq Prepared Foods just over two years ago, the company was embarking on a European purchasing initiative that aimed to save over ￡30m through purchasing and efficient manufacturing. He certainly picked an exciting time to join, and it was a far cry from his previous role as an "Avon lady". Actually, although he did spend some time knocking on doors selling cosmetics, his final role in the six years at the company was as European operations director, running its plant in Northampton and overseeing its Polish manufacturing plant. Uniq was not, however, Lovell's first move into the food manufacturing arena as, prior to Avon, he had spent seven years at Cadbury which he joined as a graduate trainee after his chemical engineering degree. Here he spent time in many roles, ending up looking after the supply chain including packaging and ingredients. His favourite role was at the Bournville factory, he says, and adds: "Cadbury is a good company to work for, as you get experience in every area."
