Gustavus Adolphus College's dining services department has introduced its own brand of reusable takeout containers, called GustieWare, which will be available free of charge to all students. Steve Kjellgren, director of dining services at the 2,700-student college, says when his department implemented an a la carte/declining balance meal plan, the unintended consequence or outcome of that program was that it allowed for meal portability. "While we have only used paper or corn-based biodegradable containers, the ever-increasing volume of them-about 250,000 during the 2007-2008 school year-has been an obvious area to focus our efforts trying to change behaviors by seeking a reusable container alternative," Kjellgren says. "College students are the absolute best population to work with in changing and establishing new behaviors because it will follow them through and beyond their college years. Our students are ready to embrace a sustainable or reusable alternative to disposable consumerism."
