Financial wiz Daniel Tsai is about to embark on the biggest breakthrough yet in China for a Taiwanese financial institution—buying a minority stake in a mainland Chinese regional bank. The deal is expected to be concluded this year by the Tsais' holding company, Fubon, through its 75%-owned Hong Kong subsidiary, Fubon Bank. "It would be a good fit for us and a good way in," says Tsai. That is an understatement for what would be a historical breakthrough. "It's a good thing for them to diversify away from a limited market like Taiwan," says Jonathan Lee, senior director, Fitch Ratings, Taiwan. "They need to follow their customers" to the mainland. But he also says that regulatory approval can't be a foregone conclusion. "It will be difficult for them to manage the regulators."
