The sun was rising hot and full as members of Israel's most elite special forces unit approached a crowd in the middle of the desert. Disguised as Iraqis, the soldiers had landed two days earlier in helicopters hundreds of miles away and traveled in jeeps to this desolate outpost on one of the most controversial, risky and secretive missions in the history of Israel's storied commando forces. They were rehearsing to kill Saddam Hussein. Crouched next to two of his colleagues, their leader, Doron Kempel, watched a man wearing a khaki uniform and a red beret 300 yards away. This was an Israeli stand-in for Hussein helping to simulate the expected funeral of the dictator's dying uncle for Kempel's team of 30 men, who had been preparing and planning this exercise for the last six months.
