Public companies now earn less than half the business profits in the U.S. economy. Over the past decade that share has been shrinking as the number of stocks listed on U.S. stock exchanges has declined from more than 7,400 in 1997 to about 3,600 today, by Wilshire Associates' count. The rest of profits are earned by sole proprietors, partnerships and closely held corporations-everything from the one-person hot dog stand to private companies with tens of thousands of workers. This poses a challenge if you want to hold a diversified portfolio reflecting the whole economy. Buying directly into private businesses takes more time and expertise than the average investor has. That leaves three other'options.
