There are discoveries to be made, surprises for the reader in actually holding these books and turning the pages," says Charles Hobson, an artist who works in the printed and bound. A lapsed lawyer, the San Francisco-based Hobson founded Pacific Editions in 1986 to showcase his handcrafted books, limited to editions of 30 to 40 copies-many of them destined for posterity in major university and library special collections. (Stanford acquired his archives in 2007.) His work explodes or, at any rate, playfully subverts the role and confines of the book form. Pages stretch out into accordion folds, overlay other pages in transparent panels, or reveal collage-like elements.
