Ted Muehling has long been beloved for the delicacy of his jewelry, porcelain, and metalwork. So his collaboration with Steuben, which began in 2004, is something of a departure. The century-old glassmaker's lead crystal is "extremely fine quality," he says. "Beautiful, clear, clean, no color to it. It's probably the best glass in the world. But it's difficult to blow thin. It tends to be rather massive." His solution: subtraction. Craftsmen in Steuben's Corning, New York, factory blow thick bowls in minimalist shapes (another Muehling hallmark), then painstakingly hand-grind and polish convex hexagonal facets, which refract light like fish-eye lenses. "I decided to cut the facets in the pattern of a turtle shell," says the artist, who often riffs on the natural world. "Cutting away some of the weight made the vessel look more precise and delicate."
