In February 2003 Tina Aldatz-Norris was in a classic small business squeeze. She nearly lost Foot Petals, the fast-growing shoe cushion firm she'd founded two years before, just as she landed her largest order. Retailer Stein Mart bought 30,000 pairs of Tip Toes, a small, flower-shaped foot pad for high-heeled shoes. The order for the dainty cushions, worth $75,000, was huge compared with the $500 purchases made by the specialty boutiques that were Aldatz-Norris' primary customers. She couldn't fill it.
