Want a quick read on how creditworthy a company is? RiskMetrics Group has one. It also scores stocks on how volatile they're likely to be compared with the market as a whole (market risk), lays odds that the way a firm governs itself will lead to trouble and ranks its accounting practices. At a time when "risk" is the dirtiest four-letter word on Wall Street, such skills have made RiskMetrics a hot commodity. "Problems in the financial markets are on a scale that I don't think even today people grasp," says Ethan Berman, Risk-Metrics' chief executive.
