On the plane to singapore for the 8th annual forbes Global CEO Conference in September I watched the Jackie Chan and Jet Li film The Forbidden Kingdom. What a joyful, heroic quest, much in the tradition of the great classic American Westerns and Star Wars.rnTherein lies a metaphor: From South Korea to Singapore, the Asian nations see themselves as on an epic quest. The growing confidence is palpable, yet it comes with little arrogance.rnHere are a few observations:rn1. Asian government officials at the national level are smarter, more learned and more capable than American public officials. Let me be clear: I would never say that Asian authoritarianism (benign in Singapore, less benign in China) is a superior model to Western democracy. I do say, with no doubt and some regret, that Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is more impressive than are George Bush, Barack Obama and John McCain.
