Of the three capi-tals of the Baltic states, the port city of Riga in Latvia is the largest and the one that most has the feel of a bustling metropolis. Riga was part of the powerful Hanseatic League from the 13th century and thrived as a trading port. The Old Town is today a magnet for international tourists, who stroll around the narrow lanes between centuries-old German houses and relax in the new cafes and restaurants that have sprung up in recent years.
