Austria, the linchpin between eastern and central Europe and the springboard from which Western trade with the newly democratic countries of the East begins, is in excellent condition. The U.S. Embassy in Vienna, under the skilled and popular leadership of Ambassador Kathryn Walt Hall, reports that the economy is expected to grow by 3.5% this year, with growth of 2.8% estimated for 2001. The drop in next year's growth is partly because of the high energy costs affecting most developed nations and partly because of the new market-oriented government's cutting of federal spending as it works toward a balanced budget in 2002.
