1. For inducing an efficient tumour-antigen-specific immune response in vitro and in vivo, mature antigen-loaded dendritic cells (DC) are needed as professional antigen-presenting cells. These can be generated in vitro for every individual from cells of that person's peripheral blood, and can be used, without significant side effects, for immunotherapy in tumour patients. However, since tumour cells have escape mechanisms whereby they can evade the control of the immune system, this therapy is of limited benefit, at least for patients with late-stage disease.
