An interpretation of Islam that synthesizes liberal ideas and respect for the Islamic tradition. Traces the ideological and historical roots of political Islam and explains perceptions of Islam as antithetical to modernity as the result of the "war of ideas" following Muhammad's passing (AD 632) and the victory of dogmatic rigid schools of Islam over rationalist flexible ones. Only by accepting a secular state can Islamic societies thrive.
