摘要

The gap between the prospects for economic growth or decline among nations is closing. After the World War Ⅱ, North America continued its rise to economic superiority, due in part to the fact that many of its economic competitors had been greatly harmed by the war. Much of Europe and Japan lay in ruins. The United States and Canada have established an economic standard of living that was the envy of the world, but this is now changing. Consider the following: 1. For the first time in more than a century, the United States could well find itself falling behind other countries in the capacity for scientific discovery, innovation and economic development (Friedman, 2005). 2. China is now the country that produces the largest number of university graduates (Friedman, 2005).
