摘要

Before Gutenberg's printing press, it must have been very difficult to value cultural artifacts, especially art. Few individuals could share standards of value beyond a close circle of friends. While the materials, such as gems or precious metals spoke for themselves, works of art were usually the property of the church, local or state governments and the nobility. And they seldom changed hands. Printing, the rise of an educated class outside of the clergy and a new merchant class changed that, and 'common' markets were born. But until recently, we moderns didn't have it so easy either. I can still recall the olden days, just a dozen years ago, when we had to look things up in books. Today, of course, you boot up, dial in, and search the Internet. Or if you're really slothful, you pay one of those expert sites like Keen.com, GavelPrices.com or ArtPrice.com to research your valuables or collectibles for you.
