The 2010 floods in northern Pakistan and the 2011 Tohoku tsunami and ensuing Fukushima nuclear disaster provide just two recent examples of events that have long occupied scholars concerned with hazard and risk. Both are stories about the devastating social effects that accompany unpredictable natural disasters and both are stories about nature's awesome capacity to reshape human landscapes in unforeseen, unimaginable ways (Clark, 2011). But what sets these events apart from other similar events, hurricane Katrina, for example, is that they occurred after the collapse of the world financial system in 2009 and, as such, serve to remind us that hazard and risk bear an important, if under-theorised, relationship with the circulation and crises of capital. Indeed, as uncertainties associated with geophysical, climatic and financial turbulence abound in Anglo-American public discourse, juxtaposing market collapse and so-called natural disasters offers a fresh opportunity to reflect on the relationship and even fusion of market risk and environmental uncertainty.
