The case studies covered topics such as beach water safety management in the UK, managing cars on Irish beaches, beach nourishment in Brazil and Sardinia, managing developed beaches and dunes on a barrier island in New Jersey, beach users' preferences in Brazil, development on landslide-prone coastlines in Oregon, beach management in Turkey to protect nesting turtles, management of metropolitan beaches in Barcelona, and the consequences of industrial development on beaches in south Wales. (I also want to point out that royalties from the sale of this book will be donated to cancer research, an admirable and unusual approach.) I suspect that a social scientist would review this book differently, and I'm sure that my comments reflect the shortcomings of a physical scientist reviewing a social science book, and possibly the wider problem of the need to find more of a common ground between social and physical science.
