Soil was modified with organic compounds to change its hydrophilic groups (OHs) by hydrophobic groups (CH_3 for ClMeSi or PMMA for copolymer). In both cases a chemical barrier was created that repelled water molecules and swelled ions, reducing the expansion effects. The use of PMMA-PAAc and ClMeSi as additives produces a significant increase in the RSV and a reduction in the REC. The RSV was increased from 0.5 (natural soil) to 8.0 (soil-copolymer) with 1.0% of additive, and the REC was reduced from 14.7 (natural soil) to 5.9 (soil-ClMeSi), also with 1% of additive. This means that the copolymer is a good additive to increase the RSV.
