The economics of education is once again a thriving research field. In the 1960s and 1970s many notable economists turned their hand to the question of education, and various classic books and articles were written (see, among many others: Becker, 1964; Blaug, 1972, 1976; Freeman, 1976; Layard and Psacharopoulos, 1974; Psachoropoulos, 1973; Schultz, 1961, 1963). Many key developments on how economists model education and education policy came out of this work. However, after this considerable burst of research activity, the field declined somewhat in terms of its contributions and became something of a specialist area within economics.
